Australia For 7 Days – Itinerary For 1 Week In Australia

Darling Harbor, Sydney

Overlooking Darling Harbor And the Sydney Skyline

Not going to lie, 7 days is not much to see Australia, you’re going to have to come back.  However, you’re going to have a great 7 days exploring one of the greatest countries in the World.  This Itinerary is going to be the basic 7 day Australia trip, focusing on the major sites of Australia, 7 days worth that is.  We’ll take you from Sydney, to Ayers Rock, and finish our trip on the Great Barrier Reef.  If you’re looking to relax, this may not be the trip for you.  This Australia itinerary is going to maximize your time in order to show you as much of the country as possible.

Day 1 – Fly into Sydney

Check in to your hotel and get out and explore the city.  Sydney is not that big of a city, grab a room in the CBD (Central Business District), this is a good point for exploring all areas of Sydney.  If it’s summer, hop on a bus to the famous Bondi Beach, a good place to catch the Bondi Beach bus is Hyde Park.  Be sure you don’t confuse Bondi Beach with Bondi Junction, stay on the bus until you can see the beach, it drops you off right out front.  Spend the day hanging out in the sun, then grab dinner and a drink at one of the pubs along the main street down there.  When the sun is gone, head back to your hotel and get showered.  Go check out a few bars and pubs in the CBD, but don’t get too crazy as you’ve got to be up around 7.

Day 2 – The Blue Mountains

Hopefully your hangover is not that bad, because you’ve got a full day ahead of you.  You need to be up bright and early to catch your Blue Mountains tour.  Spend the day exploring this picturesque region of New South Wales, bring your camera, and don’t skip out on the extra $20 for the cable car and train ride.  The tour ends with a quick run through Sydney Olympic Park, and a boat cruise from Olympic Park Wharf to Circular Quay, with a stop in Darling Harbor.  Be sure to use the Circular Quay stop, this is where you’ll see the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbor Bridge.  Have a drink at one of the many pubs in the Circular Quay area, try find one with a view. If you don’t mind spending a few extra bucks, the bar at the top of the Shangri La has excellent views of Sydney, and it’s a lot cheaper than the Sky Tower.  Be sure to walk home so you can see some more the Sydney, take George Street all the way down to your hotel.  Don’t forget to grab some alcohol from the bottle shop on your way, Sydney is too expensive not to drink before going out.  Now, get cleaned up and have some drinks.  When you’re dressed to impress and a little tipsy, head down to Darling Harbor.  If it’s Saturday night, be there for 9:00pm as they do fireworks every week.  Walk along the harbor and find a place for drinks that suits your fancy, there are plenty.  If you want more of a dance club, Home Bar with the big glass windows is a decent night out and open late.  Have a big night.

Day 3 – Fly To Alice Springs

Catch a flight to Alice Springs at your leisure, you’ve got some time to recover from last night, or catch any of the remaining Sydney highlights.  You just need to be in Alice Springs for a sunrise pickup tomorrow.

Day 4 – Kings Canyon and Uluru (Ayers Rock)

Join your tour expedited tour group for the trip through mountain ranges and an ancient river to Kings Canyon.  Explore the North and South Walls, the Ampitheatre, the Garden of Eden, and the Lost City of the Lush.  Get to Ayers Rock for sunset and camp overnight.  This tour will have to be the condensed 2 day version in order to fit it in, most tours are 3 days.

Day 5 – Uluru and Fly to Cairns

See Uluru for sunrise, a breath taking sight.  Go for a hike around the rock, exploring ancient Aboriginal sites. Then check out the red domes of the Olgas.  Be sure your tour will be able to get you back in time to catch a flight to Cairns.

Day 6 – The Great Barrier Reef

First thing in the morning, catch a boat out to the worlds largest reef, the Great Barrier Reef.  Spend the day snorkeling / diving, checking out the fish and coral, and soaking in the sun.  When you get back, have a night out with the friends you made on the boat.

Day 7 – Explore Cairns

Explore the city of Cairns.  Walk along the Cairns Esplanade, swim in the lagoon, check out the historic Courthouse Hotel and the Reef Casino Hotel.  If you can, fly out of Cairns, otherwise head back to Sydney or Brisbane and catch your flight home.

Now that your 7 days are over, I’m sure you’re both exhausted, and regretful you aren’t able to see all the other places you’ve heard about on your trip.  You didn’t have time to do some of the best things: Fraser Island, Sail the Whitsundays, snorkel with Whale Sharks on the Ningaloo Reef.  You couldn’t fit it all in to a 2 month trip, so don’t feel bad.  I hope you have fun and this Australia for 7 days itinerary helped you!
